LISLE ARBORETUM CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
2010 Count Summary

We had 73 species of birds on the count this year. This is the lowest total since 2002.

The cold weather froze up much of the water, and our water bird diversity was very low on count day. However, it's worth keeping in mind that only two of the Lisle-Arb counts prior to 1991 had as many as 73 species.

The most notable species seen this year had to be the Harris's Sparrow tallied by Bob Fisher at Oldfield Oaks Forest Preserve in the western section of the count circle. Next in line would be the record high count of four Pileated Woodpeckers from Waterfall Glen and Argonne Labs combined. This is just the fourth year they've been recorded. They seem established in this area, at least for now, so maybe they will become a regular thing.

A record high count was also set for Eastern Bluebirds. We had 89 of them. This broke the previous record of 82 from 2007, which broke the record of 74 in 2005, which broke the record of 42 in 2003, which broke the record of 37 in 2001, which broke the record of 17 in 1999. You get the picture with Eastern Bluebirds. The 38 Common Goldeneyes tied the previous high mark. The six Bald Eagles we tallied provided the second highest count ever for the Lisle-Arb circle. Notably high totals were also recorded for the following species: Ruddy Duck, Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Blue Jay, Hermit Thrush, American Robin, and American Tree Sparrow.

On the low side, what sticks out are Great Blue Heron, American Kestrel, and American Crow.
